A 17th Century Love Story

These fine painted tiles were made circa 1660 and together make a lovestory. These elegant scenes are very detailed of painting and especially the last one is interesting. It is highly unusual that the actual making out is shown.

The tiles are mounted on as a panel of four on a wooden board. The fourth tile shows the man again, followed by a man with a paper. Perhaps the notary of the father who presents the prenuptial agreement.

A rare and exceptionally large Roemer glass from the 17th century, standing at an impressive height of 18.2 cm, far exceeding the typical size of approximately 13 cm. This beautiful piece showcases the characteristic olive-green color and elegant shape seen in still-life paintings by Dutch masters like Willem Claesz Heda and Pieter Claesz, and more modern artists like Henk Helmantel. These glasses were considered symbols of wealth and were often depicted with other luxurious items like oysters, lemons, and silverware.

The glass is in good condition considering its age, though the bowl contains a few professionally consolidated cracks, allowing the glass to retain its clear, bell-like sound when tapped. Additionally, the foot rim exhibits three small chips, further testifying to its history and age. Despite these imperfections, this Roemer remains a striking example of its kind, combining both historical significance and artistic craftsmanship.

Four Dutch majolica Albarelli from the 17th century.

An albarello is a type of majolica earthenware jar, originally a medicinal jar designed to hold apothecaries’ ointments and dry drugs. The development of this type of pharmacy jar had its roots in the Middle East. Albarelli were brought to Italy by Muslim Arab traders, and the earliest Italian examples were produced in Florence in the 15th century. Albarelli were made in Italy in the first half of the 15th century and the Low Countries in the 16th century, first by Italian potters, and later by the locals. They were produced in cities such as Antwerp, Bergen op Zoom, Utrecht, and Haarlem.

The albarelli we see here date from the early 17th century. The earliest one, on the left, was probably made in Haarlem. The others could also have been made there but could have been made in any Dutch city with a majolica production.

The large ones (19cm in height!) have all restorations, the small one (10cm in height) only has chips and a crack (no breaks) and is further intact.

Two fine painted whaling plates from the 18th century.

No. 4 ‘t Loopen van de Walvis: This plate shows a sloop pulling a whale, to wear him out. In the background, we can see several whaling vessels, Groendlandvaarders, between ice floes.

No. 8 ‘t Afmaken van de Walvis: This plate shows a large whaling vessel, Groendlandvaarder, with a sloop in front of the ship and the whale being cut into pieces for processing. It is a fine and detailed painting. A fun detail is the funky walrus.

These plates originate from a series of twelve plates about the ”Grote Visserij” or big fishing, telling the process of the whale hunt and the processing of the whale into oil. A sad story 😭 but beautiful pieces of craftsmanship and history which help us tell the story.
