Delft
First-quarter of the 18th century

A faience charger with a decoration of Gaius Julius Caesar.

The decoration is painted after an engraving by Adriaen Collaert, which one can see in the fourth picture. This engraving: ”Julius Caesar as fourth king from the vision of Daniël; Emergence of Four Empires and Four Rulers from Daniel’s Vision”

On the engraving, we see Julius Caeser on horseback, with in his hand a flag with an eagle, for Rome. The horse tramples down King Cyrus of Persia, Ninus of Babylonia, and Alexander the Great. In the background a cityscape. A many-horned monster emerges from the sea next to Julius Caesar, a reference to a dream of Daniel (Daniel 7) about the emergence of four kingdoms in the world. The print has a Latin caption and is part of a four-part series that links four ancient rulers to Daniel’s prophecies.

On this plate, this image is shown in simplified form with Caesar in a typically Dutch landscape. One might think that this must represent Caesar’s famous victory over the Batavians, and might be. (The painter probably didn’t even know what he was painting) Or this is possibly one of four plates, as in the vision of Daniël, only to me are no other examples known.
