Delft
Circa 1650 – 1660

A very early Dutch delftware dish with the decoration of the Maundy or Wassing of the feet. (John 13).

This dish is exceptional because of its early date and large execution of ”faience’ delftware, an upcoming product.
The dish is so-called double white and therefore truly white. In the center, we see a detailed painting of the Maundy and on the rim a floral decoration with birds in between.

A similar plate is in the collection of the Ceramics Museum in Leeuwarden (image. 6).
Also, two similar plates are in the collection of The Bowes Museum, Durham, UK. (image. 7 & 8).

The plate is in very good condition but has a hairline at 4 o’clock as wide as the rim, from there goes a small line up.
