London
Southwark, Pickleherring
Circa 1620 – 1640

An extremely rare set of nine quadrant tiles with the decoration of tulips painted in a quadrant and so-called oxheads as corner design.
Most likely copying the Dutch quadrant tulip design, these tiles show a quite primitive way of painting which points in the direction of an early production at the start of the Pickleherring production. It’s very unlikely that they date before the 1620’s as this design was not jet made in the Netherlands and does not match the earlier Altgate production.
Beautiful large and thick tiles with still strong colors.

These tiles were reclaimed from a Grand House in the County of Essex.

One blue and white version of this design is in the collection of the Museum of Londen, further, similar examples are unknown.

The tiles are in very good condition with the normal superficial wear and small chips according to age.
