Circa 1790 – 1810

A wonderful set of two Frisian armorial plates, decorated with the coat of arms of the municipality of Schoterland, Friesland.
A broken wheel, sword, lily, and two stars are placed on a blue ground in a circle, surrounded by two bands of floral branches.
The broken wheel and sword are a reference to Saint Catherine. The lily and gold stars probably refer to Frisian nobility.

The last picture shows the coat of arms of Schoterland in the Schotanus Atlas of Frisia, 1718. In 1682, Bernardus Schotanus à Sterringa was commissioned by the Provincial Executive of Friesland to make new maps of all the towns in the province. He had previously assisted his father Christianus Schotanus in making the maps and plans in the “Description of the Heerlyckheydt van Frieslandt” (1664).

The order from the Provincial Executive resulted in the “Friesian Atlas” from 1698. A second, improved edition was compiled in 1718 by François Halma, printed for the Frisian States.

The plates are in wonderful condition. One plate has a small superficial chip on the back and the other has a very small glaze chip to the top left. Further with the normal superficial wear according to age.
