Circa 1625 – 1650

A blue, white, and orange Dutch tile with a decoration of a unicorn. It is very rare to find this mythological creature as an image on a tile, especially so well executed. What makes this tile even more special are the polychrome French lily corners. In this setting, they are normally blue, but here they are orange!
This unicorn is painted after a print of Marcus Gheeraerts from 1583, depicting a Giraffe, armadillo, ram and unicorn in a landscape.

The tile is in good condition, with a few plaster filled chips around the edges, further with the normal superficial wear and small chips according to age.
