A highly unusual and rare blue and white Dutch tile with the decoration of a Native American as a merman.
This interesting tile probably finds its origin in folklore. Tales from sailors, from afar, told back home. Imagine yourself on a Dutch Merchant ship, seeing nothing but water for months. At one point, you start seeing things, sea creatures and mermaids, spectacular tales to be told. This tile was made in the second quarter of the 17th century and painted in cobalt blue.
As corner decoration, we can see so-called oxheads.
The tile is in excellent condition, with normal superficial wear and small chips as expected for its age.
