Impressive Garniture
Price on Request – INQUIRE
Origin: Delft, the Netherlands
Workshop: De Drie Vergulde Astonne (attributed)
Owner: Pieter Gerritsz. Kam
Date: 1705 – 1716
An impressive and large Dutch Delft garniture consisting of two beaker vases and one lidded vase. The beaker vases are 16.2 inches in height, and the lidded vase is 18.5 inches in height! Pieces of early 18th century Dutch Delft in this size are rare and would have been made for the elite and royalty of the time. They would have adorned mantels or large cabinets. The decoration of fine flowers and birds is painted in cobalt blue on a tin-glazed white ground. It is quite unusual to find this type of large garniture with beaker vases on the side; mostly, we see baluster vases.
By the style of the decoration and the date of the vases, they can be associated with the ”De Drie Vergulde Astonne” workshop. The Kam family developed a style of their own during this period. Much of their work is completely covered with painted sprays of flowers and birds in all sorts of attitudes. As a rule, the effect of the decoration is more satisfactory on a large surface, as in this case on these two vases, than on a smaller object. This style of painting was used in Delft at the beginning of the 18th century. Executed by painters with a fine brush, and consequently, to produce vases, jars, tankards, dishes, and plates. Needless to say, very few of these pieces have survived the ages.
The vases are in a wonderful condition, the left vase is in excellent condition, the lidded vase has a hairline in the base, stable, and the right vase has a few restored chips to the top rim. For vases of this age, all quite normal.
