The Netherlands
Circa 1630 – 1650
A thick and early blue and white Dutch tile with the decoration of ice skaters, painted on a clear white tin-glazed ground. The decoration of this tile is very well executed. We see two ladies in 17th-century dress, complete with a ruff (millstone). Both holding on to a stick, maybe for balance, but most importantly, when the ice would break, and one would fall through the ice, the stick would help to get out of the water quickly and prevent the ice from breaking further as the weight would be divided.
Painted and with so-called oxheads as corner decoration.
The drawing of the skaters is rather small and quite unusual to find on a tile from this earlier period. Normally, the drawings in this period are large, and it is not till the third quarter of the 17th century that we will find these smaller drawings more regularly.
The tile is in perfect condition, with normal wear as can be expected for its age.
