A very early and thick polychrome majolica tile with the exotic decoration of a Giraffe.
This tile is one, among others, of the first examples of polychrome figurative tiles. The way of painting is quite primitive, which characterizes this early production. The painter and almost everyone at that time, had never seen a Giraffe, only in a drawing or print.
The giraffe is painted in a striped circle which we call a cable, the name for these tiles is therefore cable tile.
In the corners, we see some kind of whole and half ovals, when four tiles are put together: a flower ornament.

This tile had a rough life and was missing its down left corner. It has been restored with a corner piece of a similar tile. The cable, part of the flower, and the hind leg of the giraffe have been retouched.
