A Spanish galley on a Dutch tile, painted in cobalt blue, but why? Isn’t he a bit far from home? Well, not everything is as it seems. This tile was made at the end of just after the end of the 80 years war between the Dutch Republic and the Spanish Empire. This tile tells the story of galley ships in the Netherlands. The Spanish navy came with a large number of galleys to the Netherlands to protect their interest. Because these ships could sail in shallow waters and could attack even when there was no wind. The Dutch decided to build two galleys, and one of them, the Black Galley, rowed up the Scheldt for an attack on Antwerp. This ship is probably depicted on this tile, as we can see the Dutch colors in top. The galleys were not used long, as they were not suitable for the windy and wavy Dutch waters. FUN FACT. One Spanish galley was taken to Amsterdam as a war trophy, where it lay for many years in the Amstel, on the corner of Groenburgwal.
Painted and with so-called oxheads as corner decoration.

The tile is in wonderful condition, with normal wear as can be expected for its age.
