Cushion shaped flower holder
Cushion shaped flower holder
Delft, The Netherlands
De Grieksche A
Samuel van Eenhoorn
Circa 1685
SOLD
A cushion shaped flower holder or tulip vase dates from the period of Samuel van Eenhoorn. It is finely painted with a beautifully detailed flower pattern with birds and butterflies in combination with floral filled oriental cloud motifs, painted in reverse. This unique shape has an opening in the middle and the four corners, to put in the flowers.
This shape is very rare and unique. Only two other examples of this type of vase are known, that makes a total of three.
One vase is in the collection of Musée national Adrien Dubouché, Limoges, (inv. ADL 2400). This vase has the same decoration and is also by Samuel van Eenhoorn. It’s possible that these two were originally a pair. The other vase is in the collection of Paleis het Loo, Apeldoorn. (inv. RL 2667).
