London, England
Altgate or Picklehering workshop, Southwark
Circa 1580 – 1620
An early and rare polychrome English paving tile with the decoration of a deer. This type of tile is one of the earliest figural types of English tiles. Fragments and whole tiles of this type have been found all over London, especially in Southwark. A small number have also been found in the Netherlands, but they do not match Dutch production. They differ for two reasons: the manganese medallions and the leaf corners. The leaves touch the medallion instead of the edge of the tile.
Painted and within a circle, and with leaf ornaments in the corners.
The tile is in good condition, but is heavily restored. There was a very large superficial chip from the back of the deer to the right edge. 1/3 of the surface has been retouched. Further, with the normal wear as can be expected for its age.
