An extremely rare Dutch kwadraat or Quadrant tile with the most unusual decoration of Bacchus, the Roman God of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, and ritual madness. Also known as Dionysus, by the Greeks, son of Zeus and Semele. His wine, music, and ecstatic dance were considered to free his followers from self-conscious fear and care, and subvert the oppressive restraints of the powerful. The painting on this tile is quite primitive, but also progressive. Mythology was rarely depicted on tiles in this period. It has Italian and/or Southern Netherlandish influences and was possibly also produced in Amsterdam by potters from Antwerp. According to tradition, this tile was found in Amsterdam.
On the tile, we see Bacchus seated on a wine barrel, with a cup in one hand and a chalice in the other.
Painted in a quadrant or diamond with palmette corners in reversed painting. A Northern Renaissance style. This tile is also exceptionally thick, 2cm! One would almost think this tile was made as a floor tile.
The tile is in reasonable condition. It has been largely restored for about 40%. The complete down right corner, plant, part of the barrel, and feet are restored. A part of the back has been filled with a period shard. Nevertheless, a very interesting tile!
