Dutch Majolica dish with a decoration of an Amor or Cupid.

The dish is decorated with a striding Amor with a sash around his waist and a spear in both hands, placed on a ground with vegetation. The scene is placed in a medallion of a band of double blue and yellow dots. The rim is decorated with an aigrette band. This type of Dutch majolica is inspired by the style of the Italian ”compendiario” majolica and faience from Liguria, Faenza, and Montelupo.

Although the aigrette band decorations are typical for the Haarlem Verstraeten production, it was also produced in other cities such as Hoorn, as recent excavations show. In the pottery kiln waste were aigrette band decorated plates but with the addition of the stippled band as shown in this dish. Therefore we can assume this dish can be attributed to the Hoorn production.

The dish is in very good condition. The dish was broken into three, one large and two smaller pieces. One shared was missing and has been professionally restored.
